English Bulldogs (British Bulldogs) are gentle, comical, hugely loveable — and, being honest, one of the most expensive breeds to keep healthy. Like the French Bulldog they're flat-faced, but the English Bulldog takes the health challenges further, and it shows up in both the vet bills and a notably short lifespan.

The upfront cost

From a reputable breeder, expect $1,500–$4,500, with tri-colour and rare-colour pups running to $8,500 or beyond. As with the Frenchie, the price reflects difficult breeding: English Bulldogs almost always need artificial insemination and C-section births (their heads are large and hips narrow), so breeders carry heavy veterinary costs. Rescue is cheaper and rehomes do come up. Day-one setup runs a little higher than most at $500–$1,000, since this breed needs things like cooling beds and wide bowls to suit their build.

Why an English Bulldog costs so much to keep

This is the section that matters most, because the English Bulldog is medically complex even by flat-faced standards — one study found the breed more likely to have at least one health disorder than dogs in general. The big cost drivers:

• Breathing problems (BOAS) — nearly every English Bulldog has some degree of brachycephalic airway trouble, and corrective airway surgery typically runs $1,800–$3,500. It's the signature Bulldog cost.
• Hip dysplasia — the breed has the highest recorded rate of hip dysplasia of any dog, so joint issues are common and can mean major surgery.

• Eye conditions — cherry eye and dry eye (KCS) are both common and often need medication or a minor procedure.
• Heat intolerance — their airways make them dangerously poor at cooling down, so a hot day is a genuine emergency risk, not just discomfort.

• Food — a stocky medium dog runs roughly $400–$700 a year, and keeping them lean genuinely matters, as extra weight worsens every other issue.
• Routine vet care — higher than average at about $500–$1,000+ a year, since Bulldogs need extra airway and skin checks even when healthy.
• Grooming — low on clipping but budget $150–$300 for the essential skin-fold and wrinkle care this breed can't go without.
